Weapons Overview
In Dungeons & Dragons, weapons are used in combat to deal damage to enemies. The type of weapon you choose affects the damage it deals, how far you can throw it (if applicable), and other characteristics like weight and special properties.
Weapon Properties
Weapons in D&D come with properties that define how they function in combat. Here are some of the most common properties:
- Finesse: You can use your Dexterity modifier instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls with finesse weapons.
- Heavy: A heavy weapon is difficult for smaller creatures to use effectively. A Small creature has disadvantage on attack rolls with heavy weapons.
- Light: Light weapons are easy to handle and can be used for two-weapon fighting.
- Loading: You must take an action to load a weapon with ammunition before you can attack with it.
- Reach: Weapons with the reach property allow you to attack enemies 10 feet away rather than the usual 5 feet.
- Thrown: These weapons can be thrown at enemies within a range, typically noted as two numbers (e.g., 20/60). The first number is the normal range, and the second is the long-range (with disadvantage on attack rolls at long range).
- Two-handed: These weapons require two hands to wield, and you cannot use a shield while wielding them.
- Versatile: A versatile weapon can be wielded with one hand for the damage listed (e.g., 1d8) or with two hands for more damage (e.g., 1d10).
- Special: These weapons have unique rules. For example, the Lance is a reach weapon but also has the special rule that it can only be used with one hand when mounted.
