Playable Races Overview

In Dungeons & Dragons, your race determines certain traits such as your natural abilities, appearance, and role in the world. Below is a list of all the playable races available in the 5th Edition of the game, along with brief descriptions of each.

Dragonborn

Dragonborn are proud and strong humanoids with dragon-like traits, known for their breath weapon, resistance to the element of their breath and innate draconic abilities.

Dwarf

Dwarves are stout, sturdy, and excellent craftsmen. Known for their resilience and resistance to being poisoned because of their love of alcohol, they often live in underground cities.

Elf

Elves are long-lived, graceful, and connected to nature. They excel in magic, archery, and stealth, and their senses are sharp. They only need 4 hours for a long rest and cannot be charmed or put to sleep by magical means. Some also have a tendency to have a stick up their ass.

Gnome

Gnomes are small, clever, and inventive. They often live in underground burrows and are known for their curiosity and magical aptitude. They also really don“t like kobolds.

Half-Elf

Half-elves are the offspring of humans and elves. They inherit the best traits of both races, including versatility and charm.

Half-Orc

Half-orcs are the children of orcs and humans. They possess strength and resilience, and while they may face prejudice, they are often determined warriors.

Halfling

Halflings are small and nimble, known for their good fortune and resilience. They are natural adventurers, seeking out adventure while staying humble and resourceful.

Human

Humans are the most adaptable and diverse race in the world, excelling in a variety of pursuits. They can be found all across the world in many different cultures.

Tiefling

Tieflings are humanoids with fiendish blood, marked by horns, tails, and a mysterious air. Despite their infernal heritage, they are often misunderstood but can be powerful allies.

Aarakocra

Aarakocra are bird-like humanoids with the ability to fly. Their wings and keen senses make them formidable hunters and scouts.

Aasimar

Aasimar are celestial beings born of human parents. They are often destined for greatness and have a natural affinity for healing and protection magic.

Changeling

Changelings are shapeshifters, able to alter their appearance at will. Their adaptability makes them excellent spies, diplomats, and tricksters.

Deep Gnome

Deep gnomes, or svirfneblin, are small gnomes who live in the Underdark. They are known for their stealth and affinity for the earth.

Duergar

Duergar are gray dwarves that have adapted to life in the Underdark. They are known for their resilience and innate psionic powers.

Eladrin

Eladrin are a subtype of elves who are closely tied to the Feywild. Their moods and personalities change with the seasons, and they have a strong connection to nature.

Fairy

Fairies are small, magical creatures that possess the ability to fly and cast magic inately. They are playful and mischievous but also wise and insightful.

Firbolg

Firbolgs are large, reclusive creatures with a deep connection to nature. They often live in secluded forest communities and are protectors of the natural world.

Genasi (Air)

Air Genasi are descendants of elemental air beings. They are swift, graceful, and have an affinity for wind-based magic.

Genasi (Earth)

Earth Genasi are grounded and strong, with abilities tied to the earth element. They can move across difficult terrain with ease.

Genasi (Fire)

Fire Genasi are passionate and energetic, with an affinity for fire magic. They are bold and often have a hot-tempered nature.

Genasi (Water)

Water Genasi are calm and fluid, with the ability to manipulate water. They are often associated with the sea and aquatic environments.

Githyanki

Githyanki are a race of astral nomads who excel in psionics and swordsmanship. They are known for their martial prowess and disdain for their enemies, particularly the mind flayers.

Githzerai

Githzerai are a cerebral race with a strong affinity for monastic practices. They seek inner peace and are adept at psionics and physical combat.

Goliath

Goliaths are massive, towering humanoids known for their physical strength and endurance. They are often nomadic and live in harsh, mountainous regions.

Harengon

Harengon are rabbit-like humanoids known for their speed, agility, and natural connection to nature. They are often cheerful and energetic.

Kenku

Kenku are crow-like humanoids who are cursed to be unable to speak normally, only being able to mimic sounds they heard before, highly skilled mimics. They are often thieves, rogues, or spies due to their ability to copy voices and sounds.

Locathah

Locathah are fish-like humanoids who live underwater. They are naturally adapted to aquatic life and excel in underwater combat.

Satyr

Satyrs are half-human, half-goat creatures known for their love of music, revelry, and nature. They are often carefree and full of joy, with a deep connection to the wild.

Sea Elf

Sea Elves are a variant of elves who live underwater. They are skilled swimmers and have a natural affinity for the ocean.

Shadar-Kai

Shadar-Kai are shadowy elves who hail from the Shadowfell. They are mysterious, tough, and can teleport short distances using shadows, wich gives them resistances at 3rd level.

Tabaxi

Tabaxi are feline humanoids with agile bodies and keen senses. They are natural explorers and are often driven by curiosity and wanderlust.

Tortle

Tortles are turtle-like humanoids known for their sturdy shells and calm demeanor. They are skilled at both survival and combat in harsh environments.

Triton

Tritons are humanoid creatures with the lower body of a fish. They live in underwater cities and are protectors of the ocean's depths.

Bugbear

Bugbears are large, intimidating goblinoids with powerful strength. They are often used for their extra reach.

Centaur

Centaurs are half-human, half-horse creatures known for their speed and endurance. They are natural hunters and warriors.

Goblin

Goblins are small, clever creatures with a knack for sneaking and trickery. They often find themselves as scavengers or troublemakers.

Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins are larger and more disciplined than goblins. They are known for their strict militaristic nature and often serve as soldiers or leaders in goblinoid societies.

Kobold

Kobolds are small reptilian humanoids, often seen as cowardly but cunning. They are known for their traps and subterranean dwellings.

Lizardfolk

Lizardfolk are reptilian humanoids with a primal connection to the wild. They are excellent hunters and warriors, often seen as emotionless but strategic.

Minotaur

Minotaurs are large, bull-headed creatures with great strength and a powerful drive to navigate labyrinths and mazes. They are fierce and tenacious fighters.

Orc

Orcs are known for their strength and brutal nature. They often live in tribal societies and value strength in combat above all else.
